Computer training could help deliver access to fresh bread

16:43 1st June 2009

Residents in Shoreditch, London, could find that having computer training helps them find fresh bread, as a local bakery has set up a web alert service.

The Albion Bakery has established BakerTweet, which uses the hugely popular micro-blogging website Twitter to let customers know exactly when the latest batch of bread is out of the oven and ready for sale, reports the BBC.

Staff at the bakery can twist a knob on a panel to select the right product, such as bread or rolls, before a simple button push sends a Tweet update, all of which is facilitated by technology known as an Arduino Duemilanove microcontroller that connects to a Wi-Fi adapter.

Andrew Zolty, senior interaction designer at design firm Poke London, which created the technology, told the BBC: "It's for places where computers cannot really go. You could not really have Twitter in the kitchen. Without the Arduino, BakerTweet would not exist."

In related news, 104-year-old Ivy Bean has become the oldest known Twitter user in the world and posts regular updates from her Bradford residential home, reports the Telegraph.
