Computer science undergraduate courses are among those that have grown more popular this year, according to a new report from the Press Gazette.
A range of popular science courses, including combined engineering and technology and biotechnology, could lead to more graduates seeking computer training as they progress to potential careers in the IT industry.
Anthony McClaran, chief executive of Ucas, said: "There has been considerable speculation about the effect of current economic conditions on applications for higher education but these figures give some assurance that demand remains strong."
Figures from Ucas reveal that while more undergraduates may be considering IT careers, nearly 25 per cent more people than last year have applied to study journalism at degree level, despite around 1,000 job losses across the sector in recent months.
According to the Ucas website, the organisation processes over two million applications each year for people hoping to study undergraduate courses at universities across the UK.
