A new campaign dubbed Feeling Fine Online has been launched to encourage more Manchester women to use the internet, reports the Press Association.
According to reports from UK online centres, 20 per cent of women in Britain over the age of 45 have never been online, while 20 per cent of the same age group based in the north-west of England only use the internet very occasionally.
The study found that many women lack the confidence to use the web more regularly, while embarrassment is also a major issue.
Helen Milner, managing director of UK online centres, said: "Maybe you've been out of an office environment raising a family and your computer skills are a bit rusty, or maybe you're in the habit of leaving the technical stuff to gadget-crazed children or partners."
Many women could find that pursuing computer training may increase their confidence with the internet.
According to internet services provider Memset, men in the IT sector are paid an average of 23 per cent more than their female colleagues.
