Calls for training grants to boost skills set

A Yorkshire-based business group has called on the government to provide more funding for training courses to help people through the current recession.

The Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce believes central government should offer grants to businesses that would enable employees to take IT training courses and other exercises without causing the company to lose money.

Chamber director Andrew Choi told the Huddersfield Daily Examiner that as many businesses turn to three or four-day weeks to cut costs, the government could help employees get the IT training they need when not at work.

"A company cutting back from a five-day week to a three-day week could use those two days to benefit their employees," he suggested.

The government has insisted it is doing all it can to help people suffering from the impact of the recession, as new figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal unemployment has now topped two million.

Current unemployment rates are the worst since 1997, when Labour came to power, but some claim the figure could rise as high as three million in the months to come.

Tony McNulty, minister for employment and welfare reform, responded to the figures by promising that the government would "not give up on anyone who loses their job".
