Companies have been warned that they have their heads in the sand when it comes to providing IT training for staff.
A report from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has suggested that more sophisticated IT training should be provided for today's workforce because many young people entering into a business will have grown up using technology and so will be comfortable with the basic applications and functions of a computer.
However, if a firm is to release the true potential of employees, a higher standard of IT training may be needed.
Computer Weekly reports that the survey found many chief information officers and top-level businesspeople are not embracing new technology such as social networking and are therefore in danger of falling behind their staff in terms of their technological knowledge.
Denis McCauley, director of global technology research at the EIU, told the publication it is "worrying" that many bosses are failing to embrace the potential or manage the risks of new technology.
A recent report from the British Educational Suppliers Association suggested teachers need to be given better IT training to ensure they are able to confidently teach the subject to pupils.
