The suggestion that working from home leads to a decrease in productivity is "backward", according to one industry insider.
Nigel Hawthorn, vice president of EMEA marketing at Blue Coat Systems, says that people working from home "tend to start earlier, finish later and are available for more of the working day".
People already doing an IT course through home learning may want to bear this in mind when they come to look for a job.
Mr Hawthorn adds that companies need to ensure home workers get the training and support they need in order to work productively, as well as the appropriate technology.
Blue Coat Systems is a technology company that offers Application Delivery Networking, a system to optimise the flow of information between users, wherever they are.
Michael Calvert, UK general manager of Astra - a manufacturer which supplies telephones for businesses - agreed with Mr Hawthorn. He says that workers can work just as well or even better when they are at home.
