Government plans to overhaul the way in which jobseekers search for employment will include the provision of basic IT training, it has been revealed.
Ministers have proposed significantly beefing up the services offered by Job Centres over the internet, with jobseekers provided with email addresses and access to new job opportunities online.
However, the government is concerned that many people will not be able to make full use of such technology and as such is planning to provide IT training in order to increase the skills of those searching for work.
"With almost a doubling in the number of people coming through the door, we've got a much bigger range of people coming in, with different sorts of skills," employment minister Jim Knight told the BBC.
Ministers have already introduced a number of initiatives to improve the skills of the long-term unemployed in an effort to boost their chances of finding work.
Training courses at local libraries and other institutions have been established to help people improve a variety of skills, including their IT capabilities, as the government looks to tackle rising unemployment during the recession.
