BT boss Ian Livingston has announced a change in the company's IT strategy.
Instead of outsourcing IT work to contractors, Mr Livingston plans to send existing staff for IT training so they can perform a different role, Contractor UK reports.
The news comes soon after BT's decision to cut 6,000 IT contractor jobs by March 2009 was announced.
The company is reducing its staffing levels as part of an attempt to cut costs and has identified temporary workers as the most expendable.
Discussing the motives behind the job cuts, Mr Livingston said: "Profits in BT Global Services are simply not good enough and we are taking decisive action to put matters right.
"Demand for our BT Global Services proposition remains strong, revenue grew strongly in the quarter and the pipeline is healthy. What we have to do now is translate revenue growth into better profitability."
Virgin Media recently announced it would be culling over 2,000 jobs in response to the worsening economic crisis.
