A good website is as much a solution to a problem as it is a necessary tool for many businesses. But how effective can it be?
The British Computer Society (BCS) believes that a great deal of firms lose out on the benefits of their websites by not keeping them properly maintained and updated.
A survey by Netflare shows there is some truth in this. Almost a quarter of small businesses polled revealed that they had not updated their websites since they were launched.
However, constant attention is only one part of a website's success. According to Howard Gerlis, a fellow at the BCS and chairman of the BCS Internet Specialist Group, much of the work lies in the foundations, which is where web design courses could come in.
"A good website must catch the eye and provide good content which is quick and easy to find," he said.
After that, Mr Gerlis continued, companies can consider how to keep their customers coming back for more.
