People made redundant by the changing economic situation will make themselves more employable by picking up more skills.
Writing in the Independent, Steve McCormack notes that being forced to make changes helps people enjoy new experiences.
Those made redundant could, he says, look to add some environmental credentials to their CV while they are caught between jobs.
This, he claims, "might be the way back into employment and, more important, job security".
By enrolling on an IT course people out of work are also up-skilling and giving themselves the competitive advantage employers look for.
According to US university Ball State's employment service, Quest, employers like to see basic knowledge of word processing, which is taught on most computer courses.
Other skills they would like applicants to have are an understanding of the internet and familiarity with spreadsheets.
