Taking a gap year could help to elevate a jobseeker above the competition when they return home, according to gapyear.com.
Tom Griffiths, founder of the website which offers support services to people taking a gap year, said taking part in an expedition somewhere could help make a jobseeker's CV stand out from the crowd.
He also said skills such as decision-making and communication could be communicated through participation in a challenging activity.
Mr Griffiths said: "If you are doing an expedition, you are doing something quite challenging - it may demonstrate that you actually have these types of skills."
The website founder added that determined individuals will always find a way to embark on a gap year activity if they really want, regardless of any apparent financial constraints.
Skills gained on a gap year could be enhanced by IT training or additional computer courses.
A report evaluating the work of overseas expedition organiser Raleigh found that nearly 95 per cent of people who have been involved with the firm said it had increased their understanding of foreign cultures.
